backyard learning society

Additional Information

School of LIFE Backyard Learning Society

An outdoor space for child-led learning, exploration and socialization.

This group meets from September-May, 2x a month from 10 AM to 1 PM in the fenced backyard of my home in Rosenberg. Groups are limited to a maximum of 10 children each day. Registration is required to hold a space in the group. The registration fee is $15/month per family. This fee covers the cost of supplies and equipment, in addition to time spent in preparation and execution of projects.

This secular co-op takes an unschoolers approach to learning. Children will be allowed access to all provided materials for exploration with no assignment or expected outcomes. Learning is child-led and done entirely through play, observation and exploration.  There are no assessments, no requirements and no prerequisites. Children are encouraged and given many opportunities to explore natural ways of building communication, increasing their independence, and fostering collaboration with fellow learners of all ages.

While parents are welcome to be present with their child, it is requested that adults take on the role of observer, letting the child's learning develop naturally and offering assistance, guidance or information only when it is requested by the child or if there is an imminent safety concern. There are spaces for work, relaxation and conversation available outside and indoors for adults that wish to stay on site.

Occasionally, special projects may be provided for children that wish to participate that day. These will be in addition to the regularly provided activities. Such projects may include Rube Goldbergs, science experiments, small construction activities, guest speakers, crafts, cooking activities etc.

The learning space will be set up in centers which will include areas for gardening, reading, gross motor play, writing, puzzles, drama, science and discovery, mud kitchen, manipulatives, painting and chalk. While technology is not forbidden in the space, children will be encouraged to and incentivized for refraining from their technology while with the group. There will be an outdoor handwashing station and a small space for children to sit and eat should they choose to. Children will have access to the restroom at all times. Please note: Our kid-friendly home is also home to 4 kid-friendly dogs who will bark when they are alerted to someone at the front door. Allergies and sound sensitivity should be considered when registering.

If you are interested in this group, please RSVP on the events page.
